Sabudana Khichri from Indian state Maharashtra

Sabudana khichri (also spelled khichdi) is an Indian dish made from soaked sabudana (tapioca pearls). It is the dish of choice when an individual observes a "fast" during Shivratri, Navratri, or a similar Hindu religious occasion.

It is typically prepared in Indian states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. In major towns like Mumbai, Pune, Indore, Bhopal, Jaipur and Nagpur, it is available as street food and is widely eaten throughout the year.

Ingredients: 

  • Sabudana - 1 cup

  • Potato - 1

  • Lemon juice - 2 tsp

  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp

  • Groundnut - 2 tsp

  • Chili powder - 1 tsp

  • Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp

  • Salt - as per taste

  • Oil - 2 tsp

Instructions:

  1. Wash and soak sabuda for 10 minutes, strain the water and rest for 15 minutes

  2. Then add turmeric, chili powder and salt to soaked sabudana and mix, keep aside

  3. In a pan, add oil, then add cumin seeds, allow them to crackle

  4. Now add groundnuts, chopped potato to it and saute it well

  5. Cook the potato until its completely done

  6. Finally add masala soaked sabudana to it and mix

  7. Then add lemon juice and mix again

  8. Serve hot
