Turkey Berry Gravy | சுண்டக்காய் குழம்பு | Sundakkai kuzhambu

A south Indian staple, used across a variety of cuisines, this underrated — and often overlooked — berry is grown in backyards under tropical conditions. Known as sundakkai colloquially, this tangy perennial packs in taste and a plethora of health benefits.

Turkey berries can be cooked in many ways, but the most popular and effective preparation is in a curry, with healing Indian spices like turmeric and herbs like curry leaves, to boost the wellness benefits of the berry itself!

Ingredients:

  • Sundakkai / Turkey Berry - 1 cup

  • Onion - 1

  • Tomato - 2

  • Coconut - 4 to 5 pieces

  • Garlic - 6

  • Fenugreek seeds -1 tsp

  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp

  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp

  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp

  • Chili powder - 2 tsp

  • Salt - as per taste

  • Tamarind juice - 1 cup

  • Water - 2 cups

  • Sesame oil - 3 tsp

Instructions:

  1. Chop the onions roughly.

  2. In a mixer jar add chopped tomato's, coconuts, garlic, fenugreek and cumin seeds and grind them to smooth paste.

  3. In a pan or mud pot add sesame oil, once oil is heated, add mustard seeds and allow them to crack.

  4. Then add sundakkai and fry them.

  5. Next add chopped onions, sauté them well.

  6. Now add masala paste and mix them and cook them until raw smell goes.

  7. Now add the tamarin juice to it and allow them to boil well.

  8. Add turmeric powder, chili powder and salt and mix well.

  9. Add required water and allow them to boil for 10 minutes.

  10. Serve hot with hot rice.
