Urad Dal ki Dal from Indian state - Himachal Pradesh

Urad Dal is called split black lentils in English. It can be with the skin (black urad dal) or without the skin (white urad dal).


This lentil is made for everyday meals in India and every house has a different way of making it.

Ingredients:

  • Black Urad dal- 1 cup

  • Onion - 1

  • Green chili paste - 1 tsp

  • Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tsp

  • Coriander seed powder - 1 tsp

  • Cumin seed powder - 1 tsp

  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp

  • Salt - as per taste

  • Oil - 1 tsp

  • Water - 1 cup

Instructions:

  1. Wash and soak black urad dal for 3 hours

  2. Strain the soaked water, add into pan with green chili paste, ginger-garlic paste, coriander seeds powder, cumin powder and salt as per taste with required water. Cover and boil until its cooked

  3. In other pan, add oil, chopped onion, sauté , then add cooked masala black urad dal with cooked water

  4. Cover and cook for 5 minutes

  5. Serve hot with rice or chapati
