Aamti Dal from Indian state Maharastra

Amti dal is a popular Maharashtrian dish made with toor dal and a variety of spices. It is slightly spicy, sweet, and sour in taste. The dish is made with tamarind or kokum, jaggery, and goda masala, which is a blend of spices unique to Maharashtrian cuisine. The dal is usually served with rice or roti.

Ingredients: 

  • Toor dal - 1/4 cup

  • Onion - 1

  • Tomato - 1

  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp

  • Kokum - 2

  • Chili powder - 1 tsp

  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

  • Goda powder - 1 tsp

  • Salt - as per taste


Instructions:

  1. Wash the toor dal in a pressure cooker, add cumin seeds,turmeric powder, add required water and pressure cook fpr 5 whistle, once the pressure is releases completely, mash the cooked dal and keep aside

  2. In a pan, add oil, saute chopped onion,tomato, chili popwder, goda masala and salt as per taste and saute again until they are aromatic

  3. Then pour mashed cooked dal into it, add kokum to it and mix well

  4. Boil for 5 minutes and garnish with chopped coriander leaves

  5. Serve hot with rice or roti
