Since travelling by train was a common mode of transport back in the olden days, people would pack food for the journey.
It is believed that Rail Palaram was invented during that time.
These steamed balls gradually became a snack that was packed and carried by people on their train journeys in Telangana. Commonly associated with Telangana’s Karimnagar district, these small bites get their name from the purpose for which they are used. Rail refers to trains and palaram is the Telugu word for snack. Today, these steamed balls are eaten for breakfast in Telangana as well as continue to hold its legacy of a train snack.

Ingredients:Â
Rice flour - 1 cup
Chana dal - 1 tsp
Grated coconut - 3 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 string
Onion - 1
Green chili paste - 1 tsp
Ginger-garlic paste - 1 tsp
Salt - 1 tsp
Sesame seeds oil - 1 tsp
Instructions:
In a bowl add rice flour, salt and oil
Mix all, add boiling hot water to it and knead to soft dough
Roll the rice flour dough into small size ball, place them into steamer plate and steam for 10 minutes and keep aside
Soak chana dal for 1/2 hour, grind them to coarse paste and keep aside
In a pan add oil, cumin seeds and curry leaves, allow them to crackle
Then add onion, chana dal paste, green chili paste, ginger-garlic paste and grated coconut and sauté well until aromatic
Add salt as per tastes, mix, then add steamed rice ball into it and mix well
Serve hot with spicy green chutney
